Welcome to Year 6

KNOWING IS NOT ENOUGH; WE MUST APPLY

WILLING IS NOT ENOUGH; WE MUST DO

    Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Year 6 is a pivotal year in terms of choosing the most appropriate educational route.  Pupils are given responsibility in this year and much is expected from them in terms of appropriate behaviour, manners and self-discipline.
Those who choose the more traditional 13 + route and remain at Birchfield until 13 begin their introduction to life in the senior part of the school. They are encouraged to become more independent in their approach to learning and expectations of them are higher.  Academic work begins to introduce critical analysis and opinion backed up with evidence; important facets of the Common Entrance and 13+ Scholarship examinations.
At the beginning of the Summer Term the Year 6 pupils embark on a much-awaited residential trip to Condover Hall.  Whilst there, they carry out a variety of tasks such as climbing, abseiling, ‘Leap of Faith’, buggy building, initiative exercises and archery.  These not only test their courage, but also encourage and enable pupils to work together as a team. This valuable experience also provides them with an insight into how to lead a team.  These experiences shape their development within the wider curriculum and are a valuable introduction to the Birchfield Award which is undertaken in Years 7 and 8.
